Startup Reliability

A 99.99% target requires substantially more operational maturity than 99.9%. Early teams should usually start with a 99.9% service-level objective unless the business clearly needs more. Many startups overinvest in appearing reliable before the business requires it. Each additional availability nine can multiply engineering, infrastructure, and operational burden. Five nines availability can require complex infrastructure that becomes its own failure domain. Reliability investment should be matched to business model, customer expectations, regulation, and strategy.
