Junior Roles

Junior roles help inexperienced developers acquire judgment, production knowledge, legacy-system understanding, and senior-level capability. Junior developer job postings have fallen sharply. Junior UX roles have also contracted, so the entry-level decline extends beyond coding jobs. Senior engineers are developed through years of real work, mentorship, debugging, code review, and organizational judgment. Reductions in junior roles are linked to companies redirecting money toward AI systems and infrastructure. Eliminating junior roles may help short-term profitability but damages the long-term supply of experienced engineers. The article argues that entry-level technology roles are disappearing as companies redirect capital toward AI infrastructure. Removing junior roles damages the industry's ability to create future senior engineers. Eliminating junior roles may reduce short-term costs while removing the first step in the engineering career ladder. Companies cannot reliably solve a future senior-talent shortage by hiring later if they stop training junior engineers now.
