Human Programmers

The future advantage belongs to programmers who can use AI while retaining judgment, context awareness, and system thinking. Experienced developers create value by preventing unnecessary or harmful features from being built. Human-written authentication code considers operational concerns such as failure modes, security, auditing, lockouts, and infrastructure constraints. The METR study is presented as evidence that experienced developers ship more slowly when using AI coding tools. Developers must remain responsible for reasoning, quality, tradeoffs, and final decisions when using AI. Senior developers may become rusty if they stop practicing core engineering activities. Experienced developers may spend more time reviewing, correcting, and debugging AI-generated code than reasoning through logic themselves.
