Leaving with a clean handoff protects the developer's legacy and reputation. Staying may be preferable when current organizational knowledge can support a raise without job-search risk. Changing jobs is not automatically the best career move in 2026. Years of experience alone do not guarantee competitiveness against developers with current tools and stacks. A professional notice period should include transition planning, knowledge transfer, and operational risk reduction. Developers whose skills have not been updated in 18 months may become liabilities.
